Army To Provide Gender Transition Care, Surgeries for Transgender Soldiers

Updated: Feb 15, 2023

The Army should not be funding gender-transition surgeries or hormone therapy. Not only is a waste of limited resources, but doing so damages the effectiveness of the Army as well as individual getting the surgery and or treatments.

While exactly how much the Army has spent on this kind of elective surgery and treatments is not known, the Pentagon recently revealed that there has been a fairly dramatic increase in how much is being spent. Not a whole bunch as of yet but growing.

Note: While President Trump did ban transgenders from serving in the military on July 26, 2017, numerous court cases and injunctions delayed it until January 22, 2019, when 5 justices on the Supreme Court gave it the green light to the Trump administration to enact its transgender military ban temporarily, while the cases challenging it continue through the lower courts Then on January 25, 2021 Biden reversed the ban. So, between court actions and the Pentagon not exactly moving with alacrity to enforce the ban, the ban did not have much impact.

NUMBER OF GENDER REASSIGNMENT SURGERIES PAID FOR BY PENTAGON NEARLY QUADRUPLES OVER TWO YEARS PERIOD

On June 30 , 2016, Defense Secretary Ash Carter repealed the longstanding ban on transgender men and women serving openly in the U.S. military.

In 2016, the RAND Corporation, which assisted the Pentagon in studying the issue, estimated there are between 4,000 and 12,000 transgender troops on active duty and in the reserves. The Palm Center, a research institute based in San Francisco, estimates there are about 15,500.

The Pentagon expects to pay between $40,000 to $50,000 during the course of a service member’s life to treat gender dysphoria. THIS IS A RIDICULOUS LOW-BALL ESTIMATE

In June 2021, the Pentagon revealed it has spent $15 million in the past five years to treat 1,892 transgender troops. including $11.5 million for psychotherapy and $3.1 million for surgeries, according to Defense Department data provided to Military.com

50 gender reassignment surgeries performed on military personnel between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2017

July 26, 2017 - President Trump announces via Twitter that transgender individuals will not be allowed to serve in the military. Yet 193 gender reassignment surgeries performed on military personnel between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2017 and December 31, 2019

VA currently provides all medically necessary gender-affirming care to transgender Veterans with the exception of gender-affirming surgical interventions,. But that is soon to be changed.

HOW MUCH IS THE PENTAGON NOW SPENDING ANNUALLY TO PROVIDE TRANSGENDER MEDICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES TO ACTIVE MILITARY AND VETERANS?

We don't know how much has been spent on transgender medical procedures, hormone therapy and psychotherapy since the Pentagon last released data on transgender related costs up through the end of 2019. But the cost trajectory suggests costs associated with active duty military will rapidly climb to tens of millions per year.

And, with the Veteran's Administration providing transgender related medical and psychological services, that will soon also include gender reassignment surgeries, those annual costs are going to skyrocket as more men and women dealing with gender confusion issues join the military and then retire.

EACH YEAR COSTS WILL GROW

As more and more transgenders serve in the military and then receive generous trans focused veterans benefits, the costs are going to continue grow each and every year. The costs for active military and veterans are almost certainly already in the ten's of millions per year, and twenty years from now they could be in the hundreds of millions.

WHERE IS THE EVIDENCE THAT THESE RADICAL NEW POLICIES ARE PRODUCING A MORE EFFECTIVE MILITARY?
